SPARK OPTIMIZER / VOLTAGE STABILIZER / IGNITION EARTH
and everything else...

As far as I'm concern, I'm not going to pay $100 for a poor quality cheap perfoboard hobby Voltage Stabilizer and Spark Optimizer product which claim to sell all the world, with over-priced and lousy workmanship !

Disclaimer!! I got nothing to sell on this page and it's based on my own view and finding, and get what you pay for!! For personal information only.

Some of my old friend's had asked me the efficiency of this spark optimizer thing, I couldn't answer them as I've never laid my hand on it before, and nobody had any feedback or a picture of what's inside the unit...NOT A SINGLE SOUL! Coincidently one of my friends had a set setup on his car, so I asked for his permission to dismantle the unit to have a look what's the layout and component inside and do a few basic test on the unit.

PICTURE SAYS A THOUSAND WORDS
After dismantling the unit, (Fig.2 and Fig.3) shows the 1spark unit, the Casing is made out of a 2"x3/4' aluminum rectangular tubing, this unit is just another capacitor's base unit, similar to the Voltage Stabilizer unit found to be very popular many month's ago. First of all ,I have asked myself  'Do I really have to pay so much for a HOBBY circuit'? Good luck to the company and business that try to earn easy money from you!

On the left picture shows a basic layout of a typical simplified Ignition system (Shown here is a high voltage unit.. may vary from other ignition) with the spark optimizer in place! There are so many type of reference. Why Capacitors? Why your capacitance so small? some may asked. (Because caps..... HUH?  and Battery.... HUH? and their difference...errr...HUH?).  ok, let's make it simple and you will understand why!

Difference:
    Battery
allow LOAD to draw as large as 100 ampere of current without problem, that's what SLA (Seal Lead Acid) capable of but due to nature of chemical reaction thus cannot release a high energy fast enough.
Capacitor can release very fast high level of energy almost instantly but must be mounted near to the LOAD for maximum efficiency, and it can't last really long according to datasheets, if it's working at Max temperature of only 10,000 hours working life. So there no purpose of buying an expensive VS or SO unless you know how to replace the faulty caps.

Instead of making a super big capacitance concentrated on one single location, I would rather divided them into several smaller single unit where the load needed most for max. efficiency!

Spark OPTIMIZER v3.2 from Singapore -  http://www.xtreme-101.com/
1Spark from Malaysia  -  http://www.motorspark.com/

These are the two current company that build this product from what I've found on the internet search. They both have similar setup, look and somehow linked!! You got to have a look at their websites and their pages full of marketing, that will surely wet your pants! The workmanship is really bad and it looks like a homemade electronic as you can see... they have a LABORATORIES also?!!  High-tech  :)   Most of this devices was originally build by Singaporean and spread to their Malaysian counterparts... even their people in Malaysia are Singaporean..!!! I knew some of them who are on this trade.. Don't try to be smart and become their scape-goat!

I'm not really fancy for this type of device like Spark optimizer, Voltage stabilizer or similar kind of product, and I'm sure you wouldn't find them in my Car or Bike.. I would rather go for Bigger engine, Turbocharger or other Go-Fast bit's and stuff ! but due to strict restriction for mod in Singapore, many people would rather go for the 'Better Performance / Fuel Saving'  mod like VS and SO!

I'm not here to condemn their product, it does help up-lift a little performance of your ride! and for people who don't want to spend $200 or more for a good quality D1 or $70 for a Pivot or worst $40 for a homemade verbo-board product, if none of the above suits your needs then build your own or at least get  a friend to help you out!!

Take a look what's Inside !

I-POWER! Brake Booster.. hehe
what I've got to say!

WTF ! Photo of a house door for?

This is one of the interesting house @ Blk 52 , Bedok South Ave 3, #16-xxxx with interesting group of people in Singapore for the past 20 years,
which many Singaporean don't know they existed and what they do!! people who knew them are forbidden to tell including me and my classmates (during 1987)... I was in the house TWICE!
and Yes! they are still hyper-active in both Singapore, Malaysia and maybe other country which I don't know!!
Since they are long gone from this house and no one knows their current location, this is just a photo of the current location.. if the current tenants saw this information on this page and what is inside their house before, they would be scared! I'm sure.

Now I know what they really do.. so I must reveal them!

ENERGISER Ignition Coil Amplifier
Device contributed by Weijie

20/09/2008 - box measured 90 x 38 x 18.5 mm
D1 - 30DF4 (Nihon Inter Electronic) FR, 400V, 3A.
D2 - 0.2v forward voltage drop.
Another "Monkey SEE, Monkey DO" Design! or it's properly done by the same group of people with different Brands?

INAZUMA VS
Device contributed by Decry Hardiyanto Zaidi

Another EZ-stab !

Another EZ-stab from Decry.. seems like it's basically the same thing a cheaper version without the "Power-saving!" mode.. :)
but he pay $90 for this... while others are paying the same price for the extra capacitor and switch!
and a lot of empty space for such a big box. I was thinking if there are plenty of different version around, since it is very easily customizable.
A PhD design?? my 13yrs old cousin could do better then this!

Another Air-charger ?

Interesting stuff...

It's a cheap gadget.. about $70+ fitted in Malaysia, but I still want to know how it work's.. It's fitted in between the Engine breather (Cam cover)
and intake manifold using a T connector. I got a spare unit for dismantle.. Later!

Z-Stab Ver.1 - Voltage Stabilizer
Device contributed by ALAN

I've received this gadget from ALAN on 19/08/2008, The box measured @ 12 x 6 x 8cm ..
It's weird to see designer using AC 50/60Hz(Alternating Current) 250VAC capacitors on a DC application, as both AC and DC caps have different frequency characteristics, C5-C8 - 100nF(x2), 8uF and 10uF / 250VAC non-polarized capacitors commonly found on Mainline household appliances and it's the same type of caps used on Mainline power saver. There is nothing wrong with AC caps on a DC circuit, which I've asked around including people in electronic hobby and professional alike, most would say "NOT RECOMMENDED" ! Or even recommend a 4uF/63 WIMA caps for a low impedance effect, but this is not even used in a switching circuit, so I would say any common Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors would do the job. Download a copy Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors Application guide here!

Here is another common Z-Stab Claims -
"And under certain operating conditions, balance the charging system such that the alternator no longer forces energy into the battery." - EZ-stab technical section
"
Z-stab VS is used to bluff the alternator to think that the battery has enough charge so it bypass it and supplies current to the rest of the components?" - Reader's Email
"I heard that this gadget supposed to cut off the alternator from charging the battery when the battery is already fully charge and in that way, it channel the generated voltage from the alternator to other parts of the car?" - Reader's Email

"NO WAY !!"
This circuit is nothing more then a device full of capacitors!! All SLA battery charge at 13.8V (constant current charging) and anything above 14.2V (14.4V for some battery) will automatically goes into "Cycling" self-discharge/Charge mode, information could be found at well documented Datasheets. For those short distance driving and seldom use car, are un-aware that your car battery might not be able to charge properly which 'feels' like a brand new battery is losing charge.. There is no way for it to "Bypass, cut off from alternator or even under certain operating condition" any of the two voltage detected at the voltage sensitive electroplate, it will do it's job.

'S1' switch according to ALAN said - "This switch is for switching between Normal and Power-saving mode *while flipping the toggle switch.. smiling* "
I think this function is more or less understandable even by a junior electrician... (shown on schematic)

This circuit been designed by PhD (Permanent head Damage) Jonathan Wong *or do I got everything mixed up? This circuit looks more like a child's play to me :)*
If you manage to know one of this sort, don't introduce him/her to me, before you do, I'LL LEAVE TOWN !!

You can download a copy of EZ-stab White Paper here.

The value marking of the AC capacitors are badly scribble off by some sharp object (done by manufacturer),
but in order to find the value, I've use my capacitance meter to test the value of the caps,
A value of 8.848uF is shown on meter which is clearly a +/-10% tolerance 9-10uf AC caps, but the actual value are not important.

I'll update if I've found more information on this device... or you like to know more drop a mail.

This is the first version of EZ-Stab called "Z-stab" and the 2nd version of EZ-Stab is currently available on their websites.

Spark Optimizer
Device contributed by ADZ HAIRIS

Sorry!!  I've miss out the RK44 (40V, Schottky barrier diode, 3A), which is a suppressing diode, any schottky with recommended voltage rating should do the job, an common replacement diode is 1N5822 (40V, Schottky , 3A)

I've just received the X-treme Spark Optimizer unit from a reader Adz Hairis today (04/07/08),the Aluminum rectangle casing is size at L83 x W31 x H19 mm. I don't know what type of compound they used to seal up the device but it's as hard as Tarmac, after a few blow with a 5LB hammer, compound started to chip off bit by bit... LOL!! what I saw is only 5 component and that for S$160?(Current Price) It contain only 2 Diode, Capacitor and a LEDs, RIDICULERS! This is what they send to SPACE? ROFL!! Don't forget that this is made in their own LABORATORIES where I could make hundred's of this in my own bedroom..! component 'D1' a TO-220 common cathode diode which is hot glued to the capacitors, again who would want to dissipate heat onto the capacitor? And with a forward voltage drop of 0.2 - 0.6 volts, it's secondary output will definitely suffer a drop in voltage to the spark ! We are talking about 14v supply voltage with 25,000 - 30,000V output to the spark! and 30,000 - 60,000 volts for C.O.P. and E-core ignition.

Look out for it! The new "DON'T NEED TO CUT WIRE" design could be as simple as the schematic below:

Another crooks device made by some local Singaporean.
(cost to build this unit is estimated at S$5)

Who say this Device is GOOD?? I reckon! Properly ,some had been told to say what they need to say!

" S$200 ... Rip off... RIP OFF " - ADZ

As a compliment, I've made Adz a NanoPulse-VS at a cost of S$10. Cheer's !

Let me see..(need rocket science for this!) 5 component for $160... my Nanopulse-VS got 9 Resistors, 12 Capacitors, 5 Diode, 1 Leds, 1 Transistor and 2 IC's ...ermm... WAHHHH !! I can sell this for S$800 Leh!! ... SHOW ME THE MONEY !!  :)

Device contributed by Glenn ... on his 2007 Mitsubishi Lancer

He's edger to know what's inside this thing and how it work's and any improvement can be done, by looking at the qualities of both devices, they don't really works as expected and definitely not a "HIGH PERFORMANCE" device. They both have professional design stickers and rubbish point to point soldering circuits inside and all are build in their own LABORATORIES :), as I'm concern I'm not going to cut away the potting compound and with a glance of view there's a 2A682K(0.0068uF) ,470uF caps , resistor , LEDs and 10A fuse as shown on Fig3 , these are not going to boost or out-perform in the electrical system as I can't see any high-performance circuitry build in them. So the next time you are ready to buy another similar devices get someone who knows about electrical and don't get cheated by these sellers! As living standard are getting higher these day, there will be more and more these type of product people would think of...or learn to use a soldering iron at least!

FIG 2

FIG 3

Brief look at the device, after chiseled off the rock hard potting compound, it's nothing more then a piece of  junk.. some of the component are not link and I couldn't find any information or Datasheet on the IC's (ESM 797N 8346) as both +Ve and GND pin are neither soldered to the supply nor properly grounded, shows that the IC's is un-powered thus non-functional in the circuit, Pin 5 and 6 are the only pin that are soldered. the IC's is properly for show and to make the circuit looks advance and complicated to copy that all, D2 got a unclear marking but it looks like a schottky diode to me (SB xxx), R2 - 550K/2W are meant to be a bleeding resistor but it wasn't grounded.. as 550K to discharge 2200uf pre-charge at 14v that require 22sec to a safe voltage of 1.8V.   Instead he uses a basic LED to 'Discharge' the stored energy in the caps (IMO), there seems to be problem with some cars Relay for C.O.P. (Coil On Plug) "Ticking" sound without bleeding the caps when the ignition key is turn off. This LEDs is not going to solve the problem, but I got my own way of doing it. This called "Advanced German Technology" ? This is what you get for S$150 (cost to build this unit is estimated at S$10)... obviously this designer had very little knowledge in electronic and merely cheat his way thru..

This Unit is bought @ MAN EXHAUST WORKS       Blk11, #01-77, Simming Rd Sector B, Sinming Ind. Estate.

Anyway I had promise him a new set of voltage stabilizer after destroying all his device's which he had paid hundreds for...  :)

Hey! Anyone got a picture of what's inside the Spark OPTIMIZER v3.x ??  If not, I got a hammer to spare...

This Ignition Earth is even worst .. S$60/- (cost to build this unit is estimated at S$4) Sellers...No more Abalone Dinner for you !

According to Glenn, the Sales person said that the Engineer had told that this device had "lots of component inside" and will BOOST the grounding to the spark ! What kind of theory is that? LOL!! there are people actually trying to Boost the common ground, is there a way to do this? This is basically nothing more then a voltage stabilizer with a piggy tail to the cylinder-head.

Not the worst I've seen .. some uses Aluminum Casing size like a 12v-230v inverter ,but contain only "ONE" 4700uF capacitors.. Haha

Singapore got many crooks around, nothing too good to be true.

240V Main Voltage "Power Saver" !

Cautious : MAIN VOLTAGE

While I was shopping around I saw a 3 pin "Plug-in" type Mainline Power-Saver device sold in some retail shop and shopping centre which caught my eyes...The Retail price was between S$150 - 180 in Singapore but you easily found them cheap on Ebay between US$20-25! I went back home and start searching for the schematic for the Powersaver, and this is the Mainline "Power Saver" I saw it in the SiliconChip Magazine. This is a China made product, it's a Power Factor correction device. They have done numerous test on it (using scope) and claim that it don't save energy at all? The component is cheap (S$6 for all 3 component) so I just want to try it out but with a scale down version of it, excluding power supply circuit for the LEDs, component including bridge rectifier, zerner diode, resistor and Leds. So it left me with the three main component a 390V Varistor, 330K/1W and 6uF/450VAC capacitors (6uF to 10uF works fine). I've maintain my everyday electric usage as now I'll wait for my next electric bills, see if it makes a difference ?!

Sorry!! This Damn Thing Don't SAVE ENERGY AT all !! I was lucky enough to spent only 6 bucks..

Similar Capacitors base Power Saver - Xpower Saver on Youtube.com

  Air-conditioner power saver

It's out of the topic but here's another Specialize Electricity Saving device which is sold like hotcake meant for Chiller and Air-conditional, being send in by another contributor, another friend of mine (Air-con Technician). It's works by regulating the speed of the compressor using phase-shifting and it cost S$150 to install. But the track keeps blowing according to my friend so he tried to repair it by soldering a thick wire directly on the track itself, common sense had told me that the 3mm wide track can't even hold 5A of current, not to mention it for a compressor. This unit is eventually design by some Polytechnic student where they spent over 7 month to develop it and very few people in the trade knows about it !! I don't know why they want to spent time re-develop something that is common and freely available product, wasting time! Properly they don't want to let others know that it's a AC speed controller? Even a similar schematic could be found here...

To me, it's just a common phase control AC Motor Speed Controller/Light Dimmer which they have made it looks and sound like it's a specialize electric saving device, which you can buy it at any Hobby kit store for $25.

Stromberg High Frequency Converter

Anyone heard of the Stromberg High Frequency Converter before where I found it on a Australian and Malaysia sites? It claim to save fuel.. better spark... and blah...blah...blah... ,I have very few information on that except from the internet, have to cut the Ignition HT lead to mount the unit on and I heard from someone which had install a set in Malaysia and claim that it's poorly constructed, so he break it off and internally it contain only 2 retainer plate and a spring.. I'm interested in knowing the material used for the Spring? Please keep me posted on this subject!

I'm a Mechanically trained, electronic to me is just an hobby and if I can do it, so can you!
Don't get discouraged by those so called "EXPERT"! I can tell you most of the time they "TALK" only but with no practical results.
Seldom people succeed the first time, just keep on trying!

This is where I started my own Voltage Stabilizer Unit w/ Volt display, concept from a D1 and it contain nothing more then a Microcontroller, 7-segment display, 4 x 3300uF/25v capacitors, resettable fuse, Transistor, few resistor and 1M of 8AWG audio grounding cable, 3.5" x 2" x 1" hobby box. Current consumption is about 100mA(operational), could be lower with dimmer display. This unit is calibrated thru voltage reference IC, thus very accurate voltage reading.

You need to have advance electronic knowledge to build this unit, and it's not simple to solder them together also due to it's compact double-deck design!

Fitted on a Friend's Scooter Bike! Father of one.. Cheers!

Nobody bother about the Volt meter lah!!

OK! so I do a much simpler one's, similar to the PIVOT unit with a single power LEDs, without voltage display as many other's did. I did piss many others off!! Now everyone can build this device @ home. This unit cost only S$12 to build and was fitted onto a Police Officers private use car, a old friend's of mine, another happy father !

As promise, I've made Glenn a new set on my own design, cost only less then S$50 to build, including a aluminum casing and added a simple Nanopulser circuit in it... Simple yet effective triggering at 40A for 50us between 2minute 10sesond interval, slowly without hurting the electroplate, prevent it from going into self-discharge mode thus helps maintaining the battery at it's peak performance, especially useful for people that don't use the car much. Changes had been done to the circuit since then but I'm happy with it!

Pivot brand is currently the cheapest and all round performance product, As for other below is a schematic of a current Pivot VS found! simple and effective ,similar setup could be found in other VS. I didn't actually test the value of the caps but anything above 25v rating should be fine, and there are a secondary ground fuse in the original design which is not in the schematic, but this should work well enough.
